The National Sleep Foundation
and Sleep Research
According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2011 Sleep in America® poll, many people report dissatisfaction with their sleep during the week:
43% of individuals between the ages of 13 and 64 say they rarely or never get a good night’s sleep on weeknights.
60% say that they experience a sleep problem every night or almost every night (i.e. snoring, waking in the night, waking up too early, or feeling un-refreshed when they get up in the morning).
And there is a pervasive use of communications technology in the hour before bed.
A significant number of Americans aren’t getting the sleep they say they need and are searching for ways to cope.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, research shows that sleeping in a dark room can help manage people’s sleep cycles, mood and energy, and help them wake up feeling refreshed and alert. Light is one of the most important environmental factors that control our biological clock. Sleeping in a dark room helps block sleep-disrupting light and adjust our biological clock to help each person sleep and wake up at the right time for that individual.
